Resilience & Abundance: How to Bounce Back Stronger and Thrive
Life and business are full of ups and downs. The key to thriving isn’t avoiding setbacks—it’s learning how to bounce back from them. That’s where resilience comes in. Resilience is your ability to recover, adapt, and keep moving forward, even when things don’t go as planned.
In this post, we’ll explore the connection between resilience and abundance and how building resilience can help you navigate challenges and emerge stronger. I’ll also share a personal story about a major setback I faced, the lessons I learned, and practical steps you can take to strengthen your own resilience.
What is Resilience and Why Does It Matter?
Resilience is your ability to recover from difficulties, adapt to challenges, and keep moving forward. It’s not about never experiencing failure or hardship; it’s about how you respond to it. Resilient people can navigate obstacles, learn from setbacks, and find new ways to succeed.
Why does this matter? Because success, whether in business or life, isn’t a straight line. There will be moments when things fall apart, when your plans don’t work out, and when you feel like giving up. Resilience is what keeps you going in those moments.
When you combine resilience with an abundance mindset, you’re unstoppable. An abundance mindset allows you to see challenges as opportunities for growth, rather than dead ends. Together, resilience and abundance form a powerful combination that helps you bounce back stronger.
My Story: The Rise and Fall of MeetOtherMums.com
Let me share a personal story that taught me some of the most valuable lessons about resilience. Years ago, I launched my first digital business—MeetOtherMums.com. It was a friendship-matching site for mums, a bit like a dating app, but designed to help mums build connections and find support.
I came up with the idea because I was in a phase of my life where I was trying to decide whether I wanted to become a mum. I noticed there weren’t many communities for women like me—mums at different stages, or even just exploring the idea of motherhood. So I decided to create a space where all mums could connect, share, and find support. MeetOtherMums was born.
I poured my heart and soul into it. The platform was a complex, bespoke website, and I managed to attract over 300 members pretty quickly. That felt like a huge win. 🏆
But I made a critical mistake: I didn’t charge for membership. 😬 Instead, I thought I could make money through advertising and sponsorships. Unfortunately, the monetization strategy didn’t work, and the business wasn’t bringing in revenue. Eventually, I had to walk away from it.
This wasn’t just a financial loss—I was £15k lighter by the end of it—but it was also deeply personal. Around the same time, I experienced a failed IVF and a miscarriage that left me unable to have children. It felt like everything I was trying to build had fallen apart, and I was left with nothing to show for it.
Walking away from MeetOtherMums was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. But looking back, it was also one of the greatest lessons in resilience. It taught me so much about monetization, business models, and the importance of having the right foundation. More importantly, it taught me that even when things don’t work out, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It just means there’s a new way forward that you haven’t seen yet.
Step 1: Embrace the Lessons, Not the Failure
The first step to building resilience is to embrace the lessons from your setbacks. It’s easy to see a failed project or a business loss as a sign that you’re not good enough. But every challenge comes with a lesson—something that will make you stronger, wiser, and more prepared for the future.
Why It Matters
When you focus on the lessons, rather than the loss, you grow. You shift your mindset from “I failed” to “I learned.” This is a key part of resilience because it allows you to adapt and improve, rather than getting stuck in self-doubt.
Action Step
- Think back to a time when you faced a major setback. What lessons did you learn from that experience? Write them down. Reflect on how those lessons have shaped who you are today and how they can help you move forward.
Step 2: Build an Abundance Mindset
The second step is to pair your resilience with an abundance mindset. Resilience helps you get through tough times, but an abundance mindset helps you see opportunities, even in the midst of challenges. It’s about believing that there is always a way forward, that there is always more to gain, and that you have the power to create new possibilities.
After walking away from MeetOtherMums, I could have easily let that experience convince me that I wasn’t cut out for business. But instead, I chose to see it as a lesson in what not to do. I learned about the importance of having a solid business model and the need to focus on monetization from the start. That mindset shift allowed me to take those lessons and apply them to my future ventures, which were far more successful.
Why It Matters
An abundance mindset allows you to see setbacks as temporary and solvable. When you believe that there are always new opportunities, you’re more willing to get back up and try again.
Action Step
- Start by reframing your mindset. If you find yourself thinking, “I can’t recover from this,” change it to, “I can learn from this and find a new way forward.” Remind yourself that there is always more—more clients, more opportunities, and more ways to succeed.
Step 3: Take Time to Heal, But Don’t Stay Down
One of the most important things about resilience is knowing when to pause and heal, but also knowing when to get back up. After my experience with MeetOtherMums.com, I had to take some time to process everything I had been through—the business loss, the personal heartbreak. But I didn’t let it keep me down forever.
Healing is part of the process, but so is moving forward. It’s okay to take a break, but don’t let that break turn into quitting. Use that time to regroup, recharge, and come back stronger.
Why It Matters
Resilience doesn’t mean you never feel pain or frustration. It means you acknowledge it, allow yourself to heal, and then find the strength to keep going. It’s about bouncing back, not bouncing immediately.
Action Step
- Give yourself permission to rest when you need it, but set a time to come back and start fresh. Whether it’s a week, a month, or even longer, decide on a date when you’ll return with renewed focus. And when that date comes, commit to taking your next step.
Step 4: Set New, Aligned Goals
Resilience also means being willing to pivot when things don’t work out as planned. Sometimes, your original goal won’t pan out, and that’s okay. The key is to set new goals that are aligned with where you are now and where you want to be.
When I walked away from my first business, I didn’t give up on the idea of running a successful online business. I just knew I needed to do things differently. I set new goals that were aligned with the lessons I had learned—goals that prioritized profitability, sustainability, and clear monetization strategies.
Why It Matters
Setting new goals allows you to keep moving forward, even when things haven’t gone as planned. It keeps your momentum going and gives you a new sense of purpose.
Action Step
- Reflect on your current goals. Are they still aligned with your vision, or do they need to be adjusted? Set one new goal that reflects what you’ve learned and where you want to go. Write it down and commit to taking action toward it.
Step 5: Surround Yourself with Supportive People
Lastly, resilience is built not just through internal strength but also through external support. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, who encourage you to keep going, and who remind you of your strengths. Whether it’s friends, family, or a community of like-minded entrepreneurs, having a support system can make all the difference.
One of the best decisions I made was to connect with other entrepreneurs who had been through similar struggles. They understood the ups and downs, and having that community helped me feel less alone. It reminded me that setbacks are just part of the journey.
Why It Matters
When you’re surrounded by positivity and support, it’s easier to find the strength to bounce back. You gain perspective, encouragement, and sometimes, even practical advice that helps you navigate challenges more effectively.
Action Step
- Reach out to someone who inspires you. It could be a mentor, a friend, or even a community group. Let them know what you’re working through, and ask for support. You don’t have to go through it alone.
Conclusion: Building Resilience & Embracing Abundance
Resilience is a skill, and like any skill, it can be developed. It’s about learning from the past, adapting, and moving forward with confidence and an open heart.
