IS IT TIME TO GO SOBER?

I grew up in a family of heavy-drinking party-animals.

Being around drunk adults was a common occurrence, and I definitely remember being left in the car outside the pub with a bag of crips and a can of pop more than once!

This rather loud and colourful environment had it’s up’s and down’s, and I’ve yet to really dig deep to uncover the impact it’s had on my life, my choices, and my habits.

What I do know is that living among so many functioning (and at times not so functioning) alcoholics has made me super-aware of my own relationship with alcohol.

This hyper-awareness is uncomfortable – it makes me feel ashamed on the very rare occasion I do go out and get a bit tipsy, and it shines such a bright spotlight on alcohol for me that I often feel guilty for even wanting a glass of wine!

I guess it’s kinda taken the guilt-free pleasure out of it for me – which is a real shame, cause I bloody love a good glass of wine!

Now, before we go any further, I have to clarify that

I’m not a heavy drinker…at least I’m not anymore.

A few years back, I was definitely stuck in an after-work-wine-habit that I wasn’t happy with, so about two years ago I made the decision to take control of the habit before it took control of me and stopped drinking alcohol altogether for a about three months.

Here’s what happened when I went sober…

  • I was accused of being boring
  • Friend’s cancelled and rearranged nights out to ‘when I was drinking again’
  • I became the designated driver – and was cool with that
  • I discovered a genuine love of mocktails
  • I saved a bunch of money
  • I felt healthier, more energetic and focussed
  • I slept loads better
  • My anxiety eased off
  • I lost weight

So…why did I start drinking again?

The honest answer is probably a mix of laziness, peer pressure, my mixed emotions about alcohol, and just the fact that I actually really enjoy a glass of wine!

The fact is I don’t drink that much anymore (#FullDisclosure – about 1.5 bottles of wine a week), and it’s an incredibly rare occurrence for me to actually ‘get drunk’ these days (hangovers in your 40s are HORRENDOUS!!!).

BUT…the very fact that this weighs on my mind causes me to constantly question

Is it time to Go Sober?

I think the answer for me, long-term, is that I don’t want to be teetotal – I enjoy a glass of wine with a meal, I love the social aspect of it, it’s nice to let loose from time to time, and a beach without a frozen daiquiri ain’t the right beach for me!

For me, I just want to have a relationship with alcohol that I’m happy with, and I genuinely think this will come with making peace with my early childhood experiences of alcohol and changing the way I think about it.

Why am I sharing all this??

I think a lot of us are hanging in this weird relationship balance with booze – not drinking as much as we used to but still not being completely happy with how much we are drinking. So I wanted to share this with you to shed some light on the issue, let you know you aren’t alone, and possibly inspire you to move forward with a healthier relationship with alcohol too.

So, what am I gonna do about it?

  • I’m going to take the time over the next year to work through my experiences and true feelings about my early relationship with alcohol.
  • I’m going to stick to a ‘schedule’ of drinking only three days a week with a 2 drink limit (except on very special occasions, where my limit will be 4) – I feel this will help me to feel more ‘in control’ of my relationship with alcohol.
  • Once a year I’m going to Go Sober for at least ONE MONTH to detox my mind, body and soul from alcohol (SEPTEMBER – WHOSE JOINING ME????)

I hope that, if this resonates with you in any way whatsoever, you’ve taken from it what you need.

If you aren’t happy with your relationship with alcohol – if it’s getting in the way of your relationships or success – I hope this gives some encouragement and inspiration to examine things a bit more closely and take whatever steps you think are necessary to make a positive change for yourself.
